The Pancha-Ayama Model
A Five-Dimensional Framework for Education in the Age of Artificial General Intelligence — where Attention is the exponent that determines the yield of all other dimensions.
From Doing to Being: Rethinking Human Value in the AGI Era
For the first time in evolutionary history, a non-biological entity will match or exceed human cognitive capability across all measurable domains. When AGI can perform any task better, faster, and cheaper, the value of a human shifts — from doing (output) to being (quality of consciousness).
The Pancha-Ayama Model proposes that human learning operates across five degrees of freedom. The critical insight is that Attention (A) functions as an exponent, not a variable — it multiplies rather than adds to the effectiveness of all other dimensions.
When A = 0, L = 1 regardless of resources invested — explaining why billions spent on infrastructure produce negligible learning gains. When A > 1, even modest spatial and temporal resources produce extraordinary results — the "village teacher" phenomenon.

Drawing from spacetime physics, Shannon information theory, chronobiology, Csikszentmihalyi's flow research, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras — unified into a single implementable model.
Access to diverse physical environments — labs, ecosystems, workshops, urban centres, rural communities. Spatial novelty is one of the strongest known drivers of neural plasticity.
Structured, active navigation of the knowledge commons — including AI as an exploration partner. The key distinction is active navigation (builds attention) vs. passive consumption (degrades it).
Access to diverse humans across age, profession, culture, and worldview. Locking students with same-age peers for 14 years is one of the most neurologically impoverishing designs possible.
Three axes: pace autonomy (T₁), chronobiological rhythm alignment (T₂), and uninterrupted depth time (T₃). Flow states require 15–20 minutes merely to initiate — the 40-minute period destroys them.
The only dimension that is simultaneously volitional, finite, trainable, measurable, and fundamental. Decomposes into four developmental stages — from concentration to distributed awareness — mirroring Patanjali's Dharana → Dhyana → Samadhi.
Three Equations That Explain Education's Failures
The equation is not a metaphor. It has precise mathematical properties with direct empirical consequences.
Property 1: The Flatline — A = 0, L = 1
Any base raised to zero equals 1 — the multiplicative identity. Zero learning growth, regardless of spatial or temporal investment. This explains why governments spend billions on infrastructure with negligible outcome improvement. The base is irrelevant when the exponent is zero.
Property 2: The Village Teacher — A > 1
When A exceeds 1, even modest spatial and temporal resources produce extraordinary results. A single dedicated teacher in a resource-poor school, operating with deep attention and genuine presence, consistently outperforms well-resourced institutions where attention is fragmented.
Property 3: S and T are Multiplicative
High internet access (S₂) with no uninterrupted time (T₃) yields zero from the digital resource. Ample time with no diverse environment has nothing to fill it. Space and time must coexist and interact — neither dimension alone is sufficient.
