What is the difference between Binary Accreditation and Maturity-Based Graded Levels (MBGL)?
Binary Accreditation is NAAC's first-tier pass or fail gate: an institution is either Accredited or Not Accredited. Maturity-Based Graded Levels (MBGL) is a separate, optional second tier for institutions that clear Binary Accreditation, running from Level 1 to Level 5. Levels 1 to 4 sit under the Committee's Institutions of National Excellence track, and Level 5 is reserved for Institutions of Global Excellence for Multi-Disciplinary Research and Education. This two-tier structure was confirmed through a University Grants Commission (UGC) press release on 27 January 2024, followed by NAAC notices dated 29 June 2024, 10 February 2025 and 2 September 2025.
