NAAC Assessment Criteria
NAAC's assessment framework is built on seven criteria (Source: National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Revised Accreditation Framework). NAAC has Announced a Transition to Binary Accreditation and MBGL
The Ministry of Education's Dr K. Radhakrishnan Committee recommended replacing NAAC's letter grades with a binary outcome, either Accredited or Not Accredited, and NAAC's Executive Committee resolved on 27 Jan 24 to implement it (Source: National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Major Reforms in Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions press release, dated 27 Jan 24). NAAC's published binary framework note keeps the same seven criteria, works from qualitative metrics only, and retains a peer team visit (Source: National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Implementation of Binary Accreditation).
Accredited institutions would then progress through MBGL Levels 1 to 5, with Level 4 designated Institutions of National Excellence and Level 5 Institutions of Global Excellence for Multi-Disciplinary Research and Education (Source: National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Major Reforms in Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions press release, dated 27 Jan 24). In its last published note on the transition, dated 10 Feb 25, NAAC said the binary framework was proposed for launch and that committees were still preparing the MBGL methodology, and that institutions in Cycle 2 and above retain the validity of their present grade until both are launched (Source: National Assessment and Accreditation Council, most recent public communication on the transition as of 2025; confirm the current status directly with NAAC before relying on a specific date).
