Distinct Category: The De Novo University Pathway

Sports medicine, performance science, coaching methodologies, sports management, athlete development, and sports technology research.
Languages
Classical languages (Sanskrit, Tamil, Pali), translation studies, computational linguistics, endangered language preservation, and multilingual education.

Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata received Letter of Intent under Distinct Category in September 2024. This demonstrates UGC's active use of this pathway for institutions with unique national cultural significance.

Corpus Fund: Critical Requirement
Regulation 5(1) sets the corpus at INR 25 Cr for any institution not funded by the Government, and it must be deposited as a locked fund that cannot be utilized without prior UGC approval. A point worth being clear about: this is the same INR 25 Cr for General Category and Distinct Category. Distinct Category is not the more expensive route, it is the route that waives the accreditation history, so the corpus is the one requirement a greenfield promoter cannot phase, defer, or grow into. Ensure promoters have committed capital before initiating application.
