Q: Does an NCHMCT-affiliated institute also need AICTE approval?

Not necessarily. NCHMCT operates its own centralized affiliation and inspection system for the approximately 80 institutes in the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE) network, with the degree awarded via Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) or the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) per NCHMCT's own arrangement. Institutes running their own independently branded Diploma or Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) programmes outside that network, affiliated instead to a state technical university, go through All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approval separately. An institute could in principle run both an NCHMCT-affiliated stream and a separate AICTE-approved, university-affiliated stream, but the affiliation scheme requires discontinuing any other university's affiliation for programmes specifically brought under NCHMCT (Affiliation Scheme, clause 1(i)).

Q: How long does NCHMCT affiliation last before it needs renewal?

Provisional affiliation is granted for one academic year, renewed annually up to a maximum of five years. After five years of demonstrated compliance, the institute becomes eligible for regular affiliation, which is then reviewed every three years (NCHMCT Affiliation Scheme, clause 1(v)).

Q: What is the single biggest financial commitment in becoming NCHMCT-affiliated?

The non-revocable bank guarantee, which scales with intake: INR 60 lakh for up to 60 B.Sc. HHA seats, INR 100 lakh for up to 120 seats, plus INR 20,000 per seat for Diploma or Craft courses, on top of the application, scrutiny, inspection and annual maintenance fees (NCHMCT Affiliation Scheme, Sections 2-3).

Why Most Hotel Management Institutes Are Only Half-Compliant

Hotel management institute promoters and managements put considerable effort into affiliation-phase compliance: the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) application, the land and infrastructure norms, and the non-revocable bank guarantee. These are necessary, but they cover only the entry gate to a regulatory position that keeps running for as long as the institute operates.
