The CBSE Affiliation Extension Process

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) processes affiliation extensions entirely online through the SARAS (School Affiliation Re-Engineered Automation System) portal. The procedure is heavily data-driven, relying on the school's existing records and mandatory compliance documents.

  • Online Affiliated School Information System (OASIS) data complete, accurate, and current
  • Mandatory Public Disclosure updated on the school's official website
  • School Quality Assessment and Assurance Framework (SQAAF) fully completed and submitted
  • Extension filed before any section-increase or level-upgrade application

Before you apply

Prerequisites and compliance

Before initiating the application, school management must ensure the following requirements are met. The extension is scrutinised against these existing records, so accuracy here determines the outcome.

1

OASIS data

Ensure all infrastructure, staff, and academic data is completely accurate and current on the CBSE OASIS portal.

2

Mandatory Public Disclosure

Update the school's official website with all prescribed documents, staff details, fee structures, and academic records, as per CBSE guidelines.

3

SQAAF completion

The School Quality Assessment and Assurance Framework must be fully completed and submitted before the extension is filed.

4

Timely application

Schools due for an extension (for example, where affiliation expires on March 31 of the upcoming year) or whose extension is pending must apply for the extension before applying under any other category, such as a section increase or level upgrade.

Step by step

The SARAS extension application, step by step

Six steps from portal login to final submission. Each step depends on the accuracy of your existing OASIS records.

1

Access the SARAS portal

Log in to the official CBSE SARAS portal using the school's existing credentials.

2

Select the application category

Choose the Extension of Affiliation option from the available dashboard categories.

3

Complete the application form

Verify and fill in all required details, ensuring that the information strictly aligns with the data recorded in OASIS.

4

Upload mandatory documents

Upload valid, up-to-date certificates. It is critical that none of these expire during the application review period. The four required certificates are detailed below.

5

Fee payment

Pay the requisite extension affiliation fee online through the portal.

6

Final submission

Review all entered data and uploaded documents thoroughly before making the final submission.

Step 4, in detail

The four mandatory documents to upload

Upload valid, up-to-date certificates in the exact prescribed formats. None should expire during the application review period.

Fire Safety Certificate

Issued by the government fire safety department or an authorised local municipal body.

Building Safety Certificate

Issued by a competent authority, for example the Public Works Department (PWD) or a licensed structural engineer.

Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation Certificate

Issued by the Public Health Engineering Department or an authorised health officer.

Self-Certification Proforma

A system-generated document, signed by the Principal and School Manager and duly countersigned by the authorised signatory of the managing trust, society, or company.

Inspection and approval

How extensions are approved

The extension route is largely algorithmic, with a smaller share of applications flagged for inspection.

Automated approval

For the vast majority of extension applications, approval is automated and granted purely on the algorithmic scrutiny of the submitted documents and OASIS data.

Selected for inspection

A smaller share may be selected for a virtual or physical inspection, based on specific compliance flags or scores derived from the School Report Cards.

Important note

Submitting documents in incorrect formats, or discrepancies between the uploaded certificates and the school's OASIS data, are the primary reasons for application delays or rejections. Always use the exact certificate formats prescribed in the latest CBSE SARAS manual.

Found a discrepancy during preparation? Correct the underlying record in the OASIS portal first, then file the extension. An application that contradicts OASIS is a common cause of rejection, so reconcile the data at source before you submit.
