Walk the residential floor of almost any Indian hostel and you are walking the same drawing: a corridor, rooms on both sides, a mess somewhere else in the building, and a warden’s office near the entrance. The drawing is so universal that it reads as the natural shape of student housing rather than what it actually is: one answer, chosen decades ago, to a question nobody has re-asked since. The question is what a residence is for. The answer built into the corridor is: storing students between classes.

This piece is the third in a family. The first showed how classroom geometry decides which schoolchildren the building invites to engage and which it quietly excuses, and named the underlying mechanism the neutral axis problem: when a force is applied to a rigid geometry, the shape, not the material, decides who carries the load. The second ran the same method over a university campus and found the conclusions reverse at lecture-theatre scale. Student housing is the natural next subject, because a residence is the one educational building where the load being distributed is not instruction at all. It is community, and the geometry that distributes it is the corridor.
